Sometimes a Rainy Wedding Day Can Be More Beautiful Than a Sunny Day

It's often the desire of most engaged couples to have the most beautiful, sunny, not-too-hot wedding day. But the reality is that it rarely works out that way - even with the best laid wedding plans. It use to be that everyone wanted to get married in June and July, but that has shifted. We now get 3 to 4 times the number of wedding video inquiries for September, October, and even early November, for weddings here in Maryland.

In actuality, the best wedding videos don't result from the best weather. They result from the couple embracing the weather that day and having professional videographers who can use the weather to their advantage. This approach helps the couple make their unique wedding day truly their own.

Take Sam and Sarah for example, a young adorable couple who were married at The Belvedere in March 2024. The forecast called for rain that day - ALL DAY! But did the couple let it get them down? I'll let you judge by the video if they had a wonderful wedding day. I'll say this though, the rain set against the backdrop of the amazing halogen glow of The Belvedere sign and Baltimore street lamps made for some amazing imagery. And The Belvedere has such beautiful and ornate locations inside, that this wedding video ended up being truly unique, just like the couple themselves, which is how every wedding video should be. We like to watch it over and over for the inspiration it provides us.

Planning a wedding is so expensive. You can't believe how quickly things add up. From the venue to the food to the cake to to the DJ to the photographer, you always have to follow a budget, and there are compromises along the way.

In Motion Video's Wedding Video Spotlight

Wedding Spotlight is a new blog feature that will showcase some recent weddings we have filmed with the hope of inspiring couples with different decor and/or theme ideas for their wedding days. It will also show off some of the awe-inspiring wedding venues we have the luck to film at. (I know, don't end a sentence with a preposition. But, hey, this is OUR blog.)

This week's wedding spotlight is on Sam and Kaylan who were married at the Tidewater Inn in Easton, Maryland. The couple was blessed with a beautiful fall day, and the gardens directly across from the Tidewater Inn made for an amazing first look and photo opportunity. Anyone who has videotaped at Tidewater Inn before knows there is the requisite crosswalk shot with the stunning Easton downtown as a backdrop. In fact, the old-fashioned look and feel of the town gives beautiful backgrounds all up and down the street if you choose to capture some candid moments around the hotel.

The courtyard at the Tidewater Inn provided an intimate and beautiful setting for the ceremony (check out some of those aerial drone shots we captured!).

Bachelor Boys Band rocked the house all night, and a separate, but adjacent, room for the cake cutting made a nice area for guests to focus on when it came time for the cake cutting. By the way, the custom-made desserts by a family member (especially the homemade kit kats), were to die for. I normally don't go for desserts in general, and never have one at a wedding, but frankly it looked to good to pass up, and I was not disappointed.

Back to the wedding videography. The lighting all day was amazing as you will see in their highlights video. The couple was very laid back and just enjoyed their day. They didn't seem stressed, just went with the flow, and basked in the celebration their blessed union.

Part 2 - The Value of "Value-Adds"

Everyone wants a great deal on something we buy, but sometimes a great value is better. Why? Because a great value implies that the quality is there and the price is appropriate for what you are getting. Anyone who has hired a contractor and went with the lowest price knows this to be true - there are compromises we make in quality when we go with the lowest-priced service or good. Live long enough and it's undeniable.

So, it's time to shop for wedding videography. You can't believe how expensive it is. Certainly the videographer's advertised prices are just a starting point. You'll be able to negotiate down the price.

But consider this: Let's say at your job you make $30/hour. One day you go in to work and your boss tells you that today, he's only going to pay you $28/hour. It's only $2/hour less so no big deal right. WRONG! You're furious that he has devalued the hard work you put into your job. Long story, short - that night you are searching the want ads. Well, it's sort of that way for wedding vendors. Not quite the same you say - they own their own business - they make the decisions - so they have more leeway. In fact, it's the opposite, the wedding videographer has priced their service based on the amount of work they know they are going to put into it. So, don't be surprised if they're not as willing to compromise on price.

But you really want to hire them and they won't lower their prices, what's a value-conscious consumer to do? Here's my advice. Ask for value-adds. Ask for a free hour of coverage. Ask for an additional DVD. Ask for some add-on that they offer at no additional cost if you're willing to pay the advertised price for their main services. I guarantee you it works 99% of the time. Hear me out - it's a win-win. The videographer feels that you value their services and work and you get a great value with a free add-on that you would not have otherwise received.

So, sure, you can get a college student or hobbyist to film your wedding, but instead consider a video professional who is willing to earn your business with a quality value-add.

Five Things to Try When Dealing with Pre-Wedding Sleeplessness

Getting the jitters when you're planning your wedding is fairly normal, as is struggling to sleep.

However, it doesn't have to be your experience while you are planning your wedding. If you find yourself struggling to sleep or dealing with a lot of anxiety, here are a few things you can try to get yourself back to normal.

Build a New Routine

Do you have a bedtime routine? If so, it might be worth making some changes to it to help relax before bed. If you don't have one, you are missing out. Creating a routine for yourself before bed helps your brain and body realize that it is time to go to bed and that it needs to produce melatonin.

Your phone and other electronics should not be any part of this routine, because they put off blue spectrum light that tells your brain to wake up and pay attention to whatever it's looking at. This effect can delay melatonin production for 3 to 4 hours, making it incredibly difficult for you to fall asleep.

Try a White Noise Machine

If you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night because of sounds in your home or your partner's snoring, you might want to try a white noise machine.

Adding white noise to your bedroom creates a baseline level of noise that will drown out some of the other sounds, making it easier for you to stay asleep for longer periods of time.

Try Essential Oils

Essential oils are the distilled oils of various plants or other natural objects. They take the scent of a plant, and occasionally it's other properties, and make it more accessible. You can try essential oils like chamomile, lavender or jasmine as a pillow spray, as a wax melt or as a straight oil to help yourself relax before bed.

Make sure to turn off the wax melter or incense diffuser before you fall asleep if you decide to use those so you don't wake with a start in the middle of the night when you remember that you didn't do so.

Change Up Your Bedding

Chances are, you don't remember the last time that you bought a new pillow or mattress topper, let alone a new mattress . You should be replacing your pillows and mattress toppers approximately every one to three years, and your mattress approximately every eight years.

You may not have the budget to update your mattress entirely during your wedding planning process, but a couple of pillows or a mattress topper should be more doable. Getting the right kind of pillow for the way you sleep will do wonders for making you more comfortable and helping you to sleep for longer without tossing and turning from discomfort.

Talk to A Doctor

If you are dealing with a lot of anxiety and sleeplessness over several weeks or months, talk to a doctor to see if there's another underlying cause for these problems that you don't know about yet.

It may be helpful for this to keep a sleep diary so that you can show exactly what issues you are having.

Can't I Just Have A Photographer Videotape My Wedding?

Don't make this one mistake

We get asked all of the time, "Why shouldn't I just have the photography company that I've hired do my wedding videography also?".

This is a loaded question because actually there are so many reasons. I'll go into a few here:

Specialization. You want a company that specializes in just videography . You're not having your DJ bake your wedding cake. Or your caterer do your flowers. Couples think that if a company is a good photographer they MUST be a good videographer. Nothing could be further from the truth. Understanding how to capture motion on film is not the same as having your subject stand still while you set the lighting, adjust your flash, pose everyone and countdown from 3. In fact, photography and videography skills are completely different undertakings, which leads me to point #2.
- In Motion Video just does wedding videos. We've been doing it for over 15 years so we're pretty good at it. We understand the fine details of motion pictures to make your wedding video a monument to the amazing day your wedding was.
Audio. This is by far the hardest aspect for photographers to get right. You need to understand how audio works, which types of microphones work best in which situations, placement of the microphone, getting proper levels and more. Photographers aren't use to worrying about audio so they don't pay it the proper attention. What good is great video if the sound quality is lacking? After all, you can't hear your vows, the minister, the toasts, the laughter and the tears in a photograph.
- We pay special attention to audio each step of the way. From capturing ambient audio with the right, high quality microphones, to lapel microphones to capture the vows and ring exchange, to tapping into the house audio to get the toasts. You'll have crystal clear audio, which really makes your wedding video immaculate.
Working together. Most likely the videographer is a contractor. Couples will often say it's important because the photographer and videographer know each other and have worked with each other before. Actually, this may be less likely. The majority of photography companies that offer video services contract out the video services because they do not have the expertise. This means not only will the photographer not have met the videographer before, but neither has the photography company met him or her. They've contacted this person AFTER you've booked them so they don't even know who's showing up at your wedding when you sign the contract.
- You'll work with our small team and speak directly with us. We've likely worked with your photographer before. If not, we contact them before the wedding to introduce ourselves and discuss a plan to capture your wedding day so that you get the best photos AND video. We've been working besides photographers for over 15 years, so we know exactly the best way to work together.
Editing. Most likely the photography company will outsource the editing of your wedding video so they will not have the care for your wedding video that a videography company does. In fact (and you didn't hear this from us), you'll be lucky if your video is edited in the United States because most of the time photography companies ship your videos to India for editing at a much cheaper price. That's where any savings are coming in.
- We take pride in each video and approach it like hand craftsmanship. Your wedding video will be edited by our Creative Director. You'll see a copy for approval before your final wedding video is approved. Your video isn't done until you're happy with it, which will likely be right away:)
Caring. The first priority of a photography company that tacks on video as an afterthought, or to make a little more money, is photography. So for that company, video takes the backseat.

While the photographer is focused on the photos, we're focused on the video so that it gets its just due.

So, when it comes down to it, both photography and videography are an investment in your wedding day. You shouldn't have to cheapen one to get quality from the other. Choose companies that specialize in their craft - a photography company for photos, and a videography company for videos. It's the right and smart way to capture your perfect wedding day.

Part 1 - Where are the bride and groom getting ready?

I'm really excited about this new wedding video blog series that I've been working on... How to save money on wedding videography. I'll be releasing ideas and tips over the next weeks and months.

The idea was inspired by a conversation I recently had with a bride and groom about a contract I had sent over. The couple expressed that they REALLY wanted to use us for their wedding video service s, but they weren't sure they could afford us.

So I looked over their contract with them and one of the first things I noticed is that they had booked two videographers for the day. We almost always tell people that one videographer is more than enough to capture everything they'll need on their wedding day (and to create a mind-blowing wedding highlights video. ) Plus, most people have two photographers so also having two videographers can be too many people shooting at one time, especially on the dance floor.

There are exceptions where having two videographers is ideal, and I'll share those scenarios in an upcoming blog, but I'll say that one scenario is when the bride and groom want to capture both of them getting ready, but they are both getting ready in distant locations. In this case, two videographers would be necessary.

But as I talked to the couple I found out that they were both getting ready in hotels very close to each other. Why not get ready at the same same hotel I asked? This will allow the one videographer to easily go back and forth from one room to the other and capture both the bride and groom getting ready. The bride expressed that this was a great idea and that no one had suggested this yet. (This is where our 15 years of experience comes in handy).

The bride told me that the reason they were getting ready in different hotels is that they were worried about seeing each other beforehand. I told her this is easily remedied through some proper planning between the couple ahead of time with regards to arrival times to the hotel and departure times to the ceremony. On the day of the wedding, this coordination can be assured by the best man and maid/matron of honor communicating with each other throughout the preparation process.

Looking at the rest of their wedding day plans, there was no other reason they needed a second videographer. This can easily save a couple anywhere from $500-$1500 or more.

She agreed and the couple decided to get ready at the same hotel. This reduced the price of the contract significantly and they were very grateful.

I consider wedding videography to be a luxury item. It's usually one of the last things couple book because they want to be sure they can fit it in to their budget. (Truth be told, it should be at the top of the list because how will you REMEMBER your day when it's all over, but we understand you have to have a location, feed your guests, etc... - haha). But wedding videography can also be about the value it brings. And speaking with the right and experienced wedding videography company can save you a lot of money.

The thing I love about what I do is that each wedding video is different because each wedding is different. Each edit that I do is hand-crafted for that couple and their special day. I don’t have a pre-selected template or idea of how I’m going to edit a wedding video; I go where the footage takes me. And sometimes there are even special pieces we throw in later that really add to the final product. Case in point – Amy and Chris, who were married in September 2016 at Jubilee Farm in Leonardtown, a town in southern Maryland. Our wedding videographer, Gail, did a wonderful job capturing the vintage feel of this wedding. As always, we followed the footage and the couple’s unique day and it ended with a wonderful encapsulation of the spirit of the wedding.

But sometimes, even after the edit, we’re not done. Sometimes we add color grading that gives each wedding film a unique feel. This is often based on the theme of the wedding – a fall wedding may feel more warm, a summer wedding may feel blue or red – or sometimes the feel is just unique to that wedding. So, after watching Amy and Chris’ wedding, we realized that the wedding had a classic feel, a fallback to the 70s – perhaps because of the setting – Jubilee Farm. We ended up adding some color grading that added to the vintage, old time film feel and we were just enthralled with the final product. We were hoping the couple was also. And they were.

Greg and Christin’s wedding story has been by far the most interesting wedding we have ever done merely for the fact that it was the first wedding that we have ever done that was cancelled! No, no one got cold feet, but a hurricane did blow through Maryland on their wedding day, causing Queen Anne’s County to order an evacuation. The wedding was postponed. It even was the subject of an article published in Perfect Wedding Guide.

Two weeks later, on a Friday evening, the wedding and day they had been dreaming of finally arrived. The couple married overlooking the beautiful Chesapeake Bay and Bay Bridge.

If you’ve been to Havre de Grace, you recognize the iconic water tower as you approach the round about to get in the front gates of Bulle Rock. The sun setting over the green hills of the golf course is an amazing backdrop for wedding videography (and photographs of course:)! The ballroom inside is impeccably perfect for a first class wedding experience as you’ll see in Brooke and Craig’s wedding video. We’ve done a number of weddings at this venue and we love them all, but this wedding stood out for the amount of fun that the guests seem to have dancing. Check out some of the end dancing scenes. Look how many people are on the dance floor! Amazing!

One other note, for picture taking purposes, there is an old rustic barn you’ll see in the video that sits near some fenced pastures, both of which are great for creating memories. It is a short drive form the venue, but well worth it. We hope you enjoy their video.

NICK AND MOLLY – RADISSON LORD BALTIMORE WEDDING VIDEO

As we continue to catch up in the postings of all of the venues we have filmed at, so that you may search our website by venue, we come to Nick and Molly. This is very good timing to post this wedding because despite the fact that their Radisson Lord Baltimore wedding video was filmed back in 2011, we are about to film Molly’s sister’s wedding coming up in August 2015. Like Molly’s sister, Molly and her husband’s wedding ceremony took place at The Baltimore Basilica , which is the country’s first cathedral. It’s full name is The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a Catholic church located in Baltimore, Maryland. You’ll see from their full length highlights reel, that the cathedral is beautifully ornate. A full restoration was completed a few years ago, but then further work had to be done following an earthquake a couple of years after that. You’ll see in the video, it was well worth the wait – a beautiful venue for a wedding.

Nick and Molly’s wedding reception followed at the Radisson Lord Baltimore Hotel, an historic venue also located in downtown Baltimore, MD. What will strike you about this ballroom when you enter it is the size. It is huge and the perfect place for a large wedding with many guests plus a band, all of which Nick and Molly had. There is also a balcony one floor up that overlooks the dance floor – a great location to get photos and video. We hope you get a sense of the space and possibilities by viewing their Full Wedding Highlights video.

What was also unique about this wedding film for us was that it was our first fore’ into the Wedding Trailer offering. Our Wedding Trailer is a shorter, more succinct version of our Wedding Highlights, something quick and easy to share with friends and family. Moly had requested such a video, and although we had never done one before, we agreed in order to win her business. Little did we know that a new offering was born. In actuality, a regular offering of a Wedding Trailer didn’t come until a few years later, but is now one of our most popular options. Our Wedding Trailers today look much different than back then, but I hope you enjoy this throwback version.

For their wedding highlights video, Matthew and Joyce got to pick the music they would like in their video and we masterfully mixed the music they chose with other sound form their wedding day, such as their vows, ring exchange, priest speaking, and toasts. They also were abel to review it and make as many revision as they liked as many times as they liked before we finalized their DVDs. So, they got a real opportunity to make their wedding video their own and get it just the way they liked it.

There were some really cool moments at this wedding, but our favorite has to be when Joyce’s brother, who was deployed and unable to make it to the wedding called in during the reception. The DJ put him through to the dance floor as a surprise. Watch as Joyce hears her brother’s voice and they talk during the reception. It is truly a heartwarming moment.

One of the things I love about this job is the ability to connect people. Having friends and relatives in the military can sometimes make planning a wedding difficult when you know they will be unable to make it. Often times, couples tell us the main reason they want a wedding video is so that a loved one who is deployed can see the wedding that they are unable to attend. We take this responsibility very seriously and feel great that we can provide this service. GREAT ROOM AT SAVAGE MILL WEDDING VIDEO

Emily and Kenny were married in June 2011. The wedding ceremony took place at St. Augustine’s in Elkridge, Maryland. This was the first and only time that we have filmed at ST. AUGUSTINE’S , a very ornate and beautiful Catholic Church. One cool thing that happened after the ceremony is that members of the ELKRIDGE VOLUNTEER FIRE COMPANY showed up with an engine for the bride and groom to pose in front of. Kenny is a volunteer with the company.

The reception followed at THE GREAT ROOM AT SAVAGE MILL . This is a really cool place for a wedding reception, located with the Savage Mill Foundry. The Admiral Fell Inn is located in the heart of Fells Point, a really cool area of Baltimore City with a happening night life with great dining and bars. It is a great place to have a wedding and reception. There are a lot of great scenic photo opportunities on the water as you will see in Eric and Dianna’s wedding video.

The reception location is on one of the upper floors in a historic venue overlooking the city and harbor, giving your guests breathtaking views and adding to the overall ambience of your wedding day. It is great for guests coming in from out of town who also want to take the opportunity to see some of the city while in town, and as I mentioned, all of the great dining nearby allows them to get a taste of Baltimore within walking distance – something they will really appreciate.

I have stayed in the rooms here as well. They are all named after people with a Baltimore historical connection and each are unique, which makes it really cool. The room we had looked right over Thames Street, which made for great views and people watching.

Dan and Susanne were married in May 2011. The ceremony took place at THE GRAMERCY MANSION on Greenspring Valley Road in Baltimore, Maryland. Their reception followed at the same location. This is their Wedding Highlights Video.

Grammercy is one of the most beautiful places to have a wedding, not to mention film a wedding. The gardens are immaculate and the long walk the bride takes from the mansion, down the path and into the garden where the ceremony takes place, gives the groom and the guests plenty of time to take in the breathtaking views. The small gazebo in the circular gardens then looks out over rolling hills behind the bride and groom as they take their vows.

The upper gardens make for an awesome cocktail hour, enjoying the fresh outdoors. The interior is an intimate setting with a separate area for dining and dancing. I really love the ceiling fans and the ability to open the doors of the dining area to the outdoors or close them depending on the weather.

The front entrance area makes a great first impression on guests and you’ll see make for some great filming. There is also a cool swing, which is always a must take picture spot for newly married couples.

Brian and Lauren were married at HOLY CROSS ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH on East-West Street in Baltimore, Maryland (MD). Their reception was an Engineers Club Wedding at THE ENGINEERS CLUB in the Mount Vernon District of Baltimore. This is their wedding highlights video from April 2011.

The Engineer’s Club is in the heart of Mount Vernon, an historical district of Baltimore. It is an awesome wedding reception venue. As soon as you walk into the foyer, you get a sense of what to expect from this hip locale. In my experience, couples take this ‘first impression’ opportunity to let guests know of their theme for the wedding and wow them with some cool centerpieces or decorations. I remember one wedding that we filmed here around Halloween that had some cool pumpkins and other holiday decorations that we a really impressive intro to the wedding reception.

Then, to the left of the foyer is a great area for cocktail hours with cool fireplaces and couches. It says more ‘home’ than formal cocktail hour. The setup is great for more intimate receptions with a dining area that allows for unique setup of chairs and table, and the perfect area just off the dining room for buffet-style dining and, later on, dessert tables.

Then, there is the coup-de-grace, the atrium, perfect for dancing under the stars or just casually hanging out during cocktails or after dinner. Needless to say your guests will be impressed. Don’t believe us? Check out Brian and Lauren’s wedding video to get a sense of all of these areas.

This was the first time we had filmed a wedding in the Hall of Fame Court. Of course, the area is relatively new, having just been set up last year. Of course, we had filmed some receptions up on the 8th floor before. Full disclosure, we are rabid Baltimore Orioles fans so for us to have an opportunity to film there is cool.

The 8th floor reception area is set up perfect for a reception with all of the dining tables set up around the raised dance floor in the center, making it easily accessible for guests to get up out of their seats to watch the important First Dance, Parents’ Dances, etc.. and sit back down when they are over.

Then, there are the awesome views of the ballpark field, which is pretty neat lit up at night. The old Orioles memorabilia line the wall making for great conversation pieces and nostalgic looks back at great Orioles from the past.

Oh, and don’t forget the opportunity for the wedding party to go out into the dugout and take pictures! A must-see venue for all Baltimore Orioles fans.

We recently completed work on the wedding film of Mallary and Patrick who were wed at The Basilica of The Assumption – the oldest cathedral in the United States. IS A WEDDING VIDEO WORTH IT?

Years ago, I worked for a news station as a videographer and we would shoot public service announcements for local non-profits and the station put them on the air at no or low cost. The commercials would promote events or causes of the non-profits, and it was a way for the station to give back to the community. It struck me as an important mission.

As our company has grown, the importance of our mission – to spread the word about the importance of high quality wedding videography and to capture these special moments for couples – makes all of our time and effort satisfying. So, I often find myself espousing the virtues of wedding videography and the costs associated with it when I get asked the question of ‘is it necessary or worth it.’

After all, people will say, “I’m already hiring a photographer. Is it really necessary to have a wedding videographer too? Isn’t it just redundant? A waste of money? Look at everything I’m spending on photographs, not to mention wedding food, centerpieces, cake, DJ, invitations, flowers, etc… Doesn’t it make sense to cut something out? Video seems like the obvious choice. It’s not a necessity, right?”

In fact, I had a prospective client email me this morning and tell me regretfully that they have decided to not have a video because they couldn’t fit it into the budget. I immediately wrote her back and said, “I don’t care if you don’t hire me, but get a wedding video.” Then I gave her some suggestions for finding a cost-effective video solution. She wrote back and thanked me for the suggestions.

Over the years, I’ve heard from too many people who have regretted not having a wedding video. We’ve written many blog posts about this subject in the past. The thought is the same – video is completely different than photographs, and despite (or rather because of) all of the money you are spending on your wedding day, how will you remember it? You can’t without the video. And the shame is that people don’t realize it until it’s too late.

Ryan and Corleigh were married in September 2012. We arrived at Sagamore Farms early in the day to capture Corleigh and her bridesmaids getting ready.

After the bridal preparations were filmed we headed down to Little Italy and St. Leo’s parish for a lovely ceremony. At the end of the ceremony, Ryan surprised Corleigh with a limo ride for just the two of them back to Sagamore.
